Curriculum Projects
Black & White
Photography |
Lewiston High School students enrolled in teacher Jodi Thomas' Black & White Photography and Advanced Black & White Photography courses learn about all aspects of taking photographs and developing them. |
Service Learning
in the
Lewiston schools |
Service Learning is a teaching strategy that integrates service to the community with academic learning. Students become increasingly engaged in their learning as they identify problems, propose solutions, and use academic skills to improve their communities. Service learning in Lewiston schools is supported by K.I.D.S. (Kids Involved Doing Service) Consortium, local funds, and numerous community partners. |
Black History Month
Portrait Gallery |
Every year, in celebration of Black History Month, fourth-grade students in Carmen Dufresne's and Judy Albert's classes at Pettingill School learn about famous Black Americans. Students research the lives, talents, and accomplishments of these American heroes, and produce both a written report and an oral presentation based on what they've learned. Students also create life-sized portraits, bringing these historical figures to life. This engaging in-depth study helps students direct their own learning, communicate effectively, think in both practical and creative ways, and produce quality work. |
Picasso Art Style
on the Computer |
Elaine Toutain, Art Teacher, explains:
This project came about as a result of an assignment I was given in my Current Issues in Education course in the Masters of Science in Education program at the University of New England. The course teaches us to use technology as a teaching tool in the classroom. Since I have no classroom of my own and, therefore, have no computers in direct service to students, I looked toward my Art Spark program as a resource. Jessica and I used a computer in Montello's computer lab to complete this project.
This Picasso portrait extends a unit that I did with my sixth grade students in the fall. We spent several lessons studying human facial proportions--both frontal and profile views. After examining several abstract Picasso portraits and discussing his style, the students combined different views of the facial features to create their own portrait. Jessica does a very good job explaining the process that was used to create her computer version of the Picasso portrait. |
Technology
Aids Learning |
These days, technology is an integral part of the learning process. In some cases, students focus on learning about the technology itself. In most cases, however, the technology is not the focus at all; technological tools help students communicate, calculate, think, write, research, present, demonstrate, and practice. |
