Maine Schools of Nursing Scholarship-Spring Semester Dec 1 & Fall Semester is July 1

Three $1,000 scholarships to Maine residents who will be attending an accredited nursing program in Maine.  Criteria: *Maine resident *GPA equivalent to a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale * cover letter * 3 original letters of recommendation * must be enrolled in six credit hours or more per semester to be considered *must be enrolled in an accredited nursing associates or bachelors degree or a higher program * must enclose verification of educational institute enrollment in the form of a letter or statement from the Registrar’s office.

The Barking Foundation – Feb. 15, 2008

Is a private, non-profit foundation that provides grants for the accredited undergraduate education of meritorious State of Maine residents, based on their demonstrated financial need.  Criteria:  Applications typed or legibly handwritten, no e-mail or fax, incomplete applications will not be accepted, a copy of the student aid report (SAR) or the free application for federal student air (FAFSA) application.



Burger King Scholars Program – Feb. 15, 2008

Maine State Florists and Growers Association Scholarship-March 1, 2008

The Maine State Florists and Growers Assoc. Scholarships were started to encourage and promote horticulture and floriculture in Maine.  (4) Scholarships are offered in the amount of $250 each.  Criteria:  High school senior, 500 word essays, scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, and a true desire to pursue horticulture and /or floriculture (letter of reference from instructor/counselor).



11th Annual “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year “(SAMMY) award program – March 7, 2008



The SAMMY 2008 Award Program recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the US.  Judging is based on:  academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service and what role milk plays in their success. 



Order Sons of Italy in America-Grand Lodge of Massachusetts- March 15



Scholarship awards are limited to members of the senior class of any secondary school and shall be awarded on the following basis: scholastic ability, character, activities. A complete application must contain: application completed & signed, letter of recommendation, typewritten letter /signed by applicant stating reasons for applying for a scholarship, interest, activities, family size, how college ed. will financed and any other pertinent info.  Transcript or SAT. School photo.



The Androscoggin Retired Educators; Association – March 21, 2008



For a student planning to enter the teaching profession.  The recipient will be selected on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and need.  Criteria: scholarship form, essay on “Why I wish to be a teacher and need financial assistance, letter of recommendation.



**Timothy J. Mynahan Foundation Scholarship- March 21



A private, non-profit organization established in 1991 in memory of the late Timothy J. Mynahan.  He was an active participant in ice hockey and soccer.  An intense player on the varsity soccer team, he received post-season accolades as the team’s most outstanding defensive player, and was also selected to the first team All SMAA.  Tim graduated from LHS in 1998 as valedictorian of his class.  He was a member of the National Honor Society and an officer in the Key Club.  He attended The College of the Holy Cross.  He was twice the recipient of the Charles A. Dana Scholarship.  He was selected as a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Honor Society.

The scholarship will be awarded to students who have demonstrated academic, athletics, and leadership abilities.  The high school senior must have GPA of 85 or better.  Must have participated in at least one varsity sport and participated in other extracurricular activities.



2008 Bob Elliot-WMTW-TV 8 Journalism Scholarship- March 24, 2008



The scholarship awards $1500 to one graduating high school senior within the WMTW-TV 8 viewing area who plans to major in journalism, communications or a related area of study.  This scholarship is a one-time-only grant.

Alice Austin & Mary Schuman Scholarship Fun – March 30, 2008



In memory of Alice Austin and Mary Schuman, two sisters born in Leeds, Maine.  Both Alice and Mary loved children and believed strongly in the importance of education.  They recognized that a fundamental component of good education is highly trained and motivated teachers that encourage their students to excel and to reach their full potential.  This scholarship fund is intended to assist students in the L/A and Green area pursuing studies in the field of education.  Criteria: * Graduating high school student, 3 letters of recommendation, and an essay.



AGC of Maine Education Foundation 2008 Scholarship Program-March 31, 2008



Serving Construction-Related Careers” Eligibility Criteria:


       Maine Resident * Must be entering or enrolled in an undergraduate, construction-related field of study at an accredited Maine post-secondary instate * Must demonstrate a financial need * Must meet reasonable academic standards * Must complete a 150-word, typed essay on 8 ? x 11 paper explaining why you are pursuing a career in construction * Must include transcript.



Margaret Chase Smith Essay Contest – April 1, 2008



The rules of the essay contest are minimal.  The competition is limited to Maine high school seniors.  The essay should be typed and doubled-spaced.  There is no minimum or maximum length requirement—quality of evidence, argumentation, and writing is more important than quantity of words.

American Lung Association of Maine Golf Privilege Card Scholarship-April 1, 2008

(3) $500 scholarships are awarded to graduating Maine high school seniors.  Scholarships are awarded based on essay question answer, references and review of completed application.  All applicants will be notified of their results in mid April.

Criteria:* citizen of US and permanent resident of the State of Maine

*Graduate 2008 * entering the first year of Post-High School education or training in fall 2008.  Applicant must show evidence of acceptance into an accredited college or vocational tech. school * Involved in the game of golf either as a player, member of a golf team or employee of a golf course. * Pursuing further education in a health education/health promotion or environmental related field * a non-tobacco user.





Maine Family Credit Union – April 1, 2008

Awarding three scholarships: The Founders Scholarship, The Maurice Fontaine Sr., Scholarship and The Roger Bissonnette Scholarship.



Eligibility – Applicant must be a member of Maine Federal Credit Union, graduating high school senior, must be accepted as an incoming freshman to a two-year community college, four-year college or university or technical school and student must begin within one year of the award.



Senator George J. Mitchell  Scholarship Program – April 1, 2008



Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from every public high school in Maine each year.  The focus of the Mitchell Institute always has been, and continues to be, Maine students attending Maine College and Universities.   The criteria are academic potential, community service and financial need.




New England District Kiwanis International Auburn-Lewiston Kiwanis Club ($750) April 1, 2008



Fill out scholarship form along with a one-page essay from the applicant about why they need to win, returned along with an official copy of the transcript.



**Rainbow Federal Credit Union Scholarship April 15, 2008



The purpose of the Rainbow Federal Credit Union Scholarship Program is to recognize students who have shown excellence in scholastic, extra curricular and community activities and who are interested in advancing their education.  Requirements: student in good standing, official copy of grade transcript, scholarship application, letter of recommendation from a teacher.















**Thomas J. Landers Memorial Scholarship – April 16



The purpose of this program is to promote the ideas and concept to the youth of our state for law enforcement as a professional career by awarding scholarships to deserving graduating seniors.  Criteria: 300 words statement on what area of law enforcement you wish to pursue and why you have made that choice,  education history from 9th to present, 3 letters of recommendations, all areas of application must be completed.





**(MSEA) Maine State Employees Association Scholarships-April 18

Howard L. Bowen, Murray L. Brown, George A. Davala, Richard J. McDonough, Maine Community college Scholarships-



Please note that all applicants must have a relationship with a dues-paying MSEA member.  Dependents of schoolteachers are not eligible. Basis for awarding all scholarships:  Character, leadership, service to others, financial need and scholastic ability. Requirements: hs transcript, essay, itemized statement of financial resources, 2007 Fed. Income Tax, extra curricular activities, scholastic reference letter and one non-scholastic reference letter.

**The Lesley K. Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund – April 30, 2008



The purpose of the Lesley K. Martin Scholarship Fund is to recognize a Lewiston High School student who has shown leadership in extracurricular activities, community involvement and has an interest in continuing his/her education.

Criteria: *graduating senior, accepted as an incoming freshman to an accredited two or four year college, university of tech school, *studies must begin within one year of award *Androscoggin Bank employees and members of their immediate family are not eligible to participate.



The Phillips Memorial Scholarship – May 1, 2008



This fund offers renewable, 4-year scholarships to students with financial need who display academic excellence, a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society, good character, and a strong work ethic.

The Annette M. Brown Scholarship – May 1, 2008



This scholarship supports graduating seniors pursuing post-secondary education.  Criteria: financial need – level of academic achievement suitable for predicting success in college – strong character and family value – a preference for first-generation college students.  Applications will be submitted to the Maine Community Foundation.












***Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union- May 5, 2008



The Rochelle “Russ” Livernois Memorial Scholarship offering three $500 scholarships in memory of Rochelle Livernois, one of the founding members of the Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union.   The Lisbon Credit Union believes in promoting scholastic excellence and continuing education.  Criteria: a graduating senior * a member of the Lisbon Credit Union or the child of a member * GPA 2.50 or higher * accepted as an incoming freshman to an accredited two or four year college.



The Maine Society of Professional Engineers- May 31, 2008



Awarding two scholarships for high school seniors:  The Robert E. Chute P.E. / Vernon T. Swain P.E. Scholarship –



You will need: application, scholarship recommendation of teacher (at least two), employer recommendation (optional), essay, transcript, attach SAT/ACT official score report.



All applicants must intend to earn a degree in engineering and to enter the practice of engineering after graduation.



Abbott & Fenner Scholarship, June 20, 2008



The A & F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution.  To apply for this scholarship you will need to write an essay on one of the two topics:* Discuss, in less than 1000 words, what you consider to be the single most important societal problem? Why?  * How has your education contributed to who you are today or how will it affect who you will become? *BigSun Scholarship – June 20, 2008



The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits.  Offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student.  All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.  The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution.

Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association – July 15, 2008

Annual scholarship to deserving women who have participated in some aspect of the game of golf, and are planning to continue their education beyond high school.  Consideration will be given to the applicant’s involvement in golf as well her academic achievements and extra-curricular activities.  The applicant should live within the southern Maine area which includes all of York, Cumberland, Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties, a portion of Oxford County including Bethel and points south, a portion of Kennebec County including Litchfield and points south, and the towns of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor in Lincoln County.
