SCHOLARSHIPS 2007-08

Maine Schools of Nursing Scholarship-Spring Semester Dec 1 & Fall Semester is July 1
Three $1,000 scholarships to Maine residents who will be attending an accredited nursing program in Maine.  Criteria: *Maine resident *GPA equivalent to a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale * cover letter * 3 original letters of recommendation * must be enrolled in six credit hours or more per semester to be considered *must be enrolled in an accredited nursing associates or bachelors degree or a higher program * must enclose verification of educational institute enrollment in the form of a letter or statement from the Registrar’s office.

**Maine Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society- George V. Soule Scholarship- April 9, 2008

Deserving students who will be starting or continuing their education in the fields of Wildlife Conservation, Conservation Law Enforcement, or Forest Mgmt.  Each student must intend to become a practitioner in one of the above-mentioned fields, preferably in the state of Maine.  These scholarships are available to students entering college or who have completed up to two years of college.

**Rainbow Federal Credit Union Scholarship April 15, 2008

The purpose of the Rainbow Federal Credit Union Scholarship Program is to recognize students who have shown excellence in scholastic, extra curricular and community activities and who are interested in advancing their education.  Requirements: student in good standing, official copy of grade transcript, scholarship application, letter of recommendation from a teacher.

**Cavalier Bingo Sports Scholarship- April 15, 2008

The Cavalier Bingo Sports Scholarship Committee will award $500 college scholarships to seniors from L/A high schools who have been active in sports during high school, and who have been accepted into college for the fall of 2008.

**MEDEA  Scholarship- April 15, 2008

Two (2) $500 scholarships minimum to encourage and assist young people of Maine to start post high school education in any field; vocational, technical or academic. One for any resident of Maine and one for MEDEA member’s family only.  Criteria: one scholarship for a first-year, full time student, 2nd scholarship for MEDEA family member entering any academic year, resident of Maine, accepted at an accredited school, college or training program, 300 word essay, must have instructed driver education by an instructor that is a member of MEDEA, photo copy of driver education course completion card, clean driving record.   207-474-6400

**The University of Maine- Creative Design at CAD Camp-April 5, 2008

For the 7th year campers can explore Creative Design at CAD Camp from July 6-11, 2008.  This fun, active camp experience builds computer, leadership, and teamwork skills in commuter and resident campers entering grades nine through twelve.  Also, a limited number of Creative Design at Cad Camp scholarships are available.

**Thomas J. Landers Memorial Scholarship – April 16

The purpose of this program is to promote the ideas and concept to the youth of our state for law enforcement as a professional career by awarding scholarships to deserving graduating seniors.  Criteria: 300 words statement on what area of law enforcement you wish to pursue and why you have made that choice,  education history from 9th to present, 3 letters of recommendations, all areas of application must be completed.

Please note that all applicants must have a relationship with a dues-paying MSEA member.  Dependents of schoolteachers are not eligible. Basis for awarding all scholarships:  Character, leadership, service to others, financial need and scholastic ability. Requirements: hs transcript, essay, itemized statement of financial resources, 2007 Fed. Income Tax, extra curricular activities, scholastic reference letter and one non-scholastic reference letter.

**Woman’s Literary Union – April 26, 2008

A student graduating from high school in Androscoggin County who plans to enter the field of Arts and Literature.  The recipient will be selected on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and financial need.  The amount of the scholarship will be sent to the college bursar after the winner has successfully earned a 2.6 GPA or better for his/her first semester of college work.  Criteria:  Application, essay, transcript, letter of recommendation.

**Liberty Graphics Art Scholarship-April 28

11th annual $1000 Art Scholarship to a Maine high school senior.  This award is intended to aid and encourage students in the pursuit of their artistic experiences and learning.  Criteria: Artwork should reflect our natural environment, original work in traditional flat media is the preferred format, and more than one work may be submitted


**The Lesley K. Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund – April 30, 2008

The purpose of the Lesley K. Martin Scholarship Fund is to recognize a Lewiston High School student who has shown leadership in extracurricular activities, community involvement and has an interest in continuing his/her education.
Criteria: *graduating senior, accepted as an incoming freshman to an accredited two or four year college, university of tech school, *studies must begin within one year of award *Androscoggin Bank employees and members of their immediate family are not eligible to participate.

**Maine State Grange – April 30, 2008

The Maine State Grange Agriculture Committee is looking for young men and women who are pursuing a career in agriculture or agriculturally related fields at the college level.  Criteria: Maine resident, application completed in full and postmarked by April 30, applicant pursuing a career in agriculture or an agriculturally related field.

**The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Patrick’s Church- April 30, 2008

Sponsoring two $2000 scholarships to be awarded for the 2008-09 school year.  The applicant must: be a senior in high school, have applied to a higher learning institution that grants degrees, fill out application, and return by April 30, 2008.

**Mechanic Savings Bank- April 30, 2008

Two students from LHS will be awarded $1000- Criteria: High school senior planning to pursue a higher education at a 2 or 4 year College University of tech. school.  GPA of 85 or better for 3 years and be in good standing at current high school.  Demonstrated community service experience and of good moral character.


**Maine Journeymen Inc. Scholarship-April 30, 2008

The Maine Journeymen Inc. a non profit organization has created the Joseph W. Asali Memorial Scholarship and presents annually a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a post secondary education in the mechanical engineering field.
Criteria; High school senior with a 3.00 or better GPA and post secondary aspirations* Show evidence of responsibility, reliability, honesty and exceptional character and leadership, *be a citizen of USA.

The Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship – May 1, 2008

This fund offers renewable, 4-year scholarships to students with financial need who display academic excellence, a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society, good character, and a strong work ethic.

The Annette M. Brown Scholarship – May 1, 2008

This scholarship supports graduating seniors pursuing post-secondary education.  Criteria: financial need – level of academic achievement suitable for predicting success in college – strong character and family value – a preference for first-generation college students.  Applications will be submitted to the Maine Community Foundation.



**Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram Scholarship-May 1

This fund established by Blethen Maine Newspapers to provide renewable support to graduating high school seniors who are Maine residents and students of color enrolled full-time in a degree program at the University of Southern Maine.

** National Association of Women in Construction-May 1, 2008

For young men and women in Maine who are pursuing a career in construction.  Applicants must enroll in a construction related course in a post-secondary.  Courses include civil engineering, construction mgmt., architecture, welding, carpentry and similar courses that will prepare them for a construction career.  NAWICMaine@aol.com

**Lisa Giguere Scholarship Award for Journalism-May 2

Graduating seniors who have interest in journalism.  This scholarship is designed to identify promising, questioning, young journalists and help them develop their talents.

**Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union- May 5, 2008

The Rochelle “Russ” Livernois Memorial Scholarship offering three $500 scholarships in memory of Rochelle Livernois, one of the founding members of the Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union.   The Lisbon Credit Union believes in promoting scholastic excellence and continuing education.  Criteria: a graduating senior * a member of the Lisbon Credit Union or the child of a member * GPA 2.50 or higher * accepted as an incoming freshman to an accredited two or four year college.

Lewiston Education Association –May 16

The LEA Scholarship is given annually to the child of an LEA member or, if none apply, to a Lewiston High School senior who will be entering the field of education.  The scholarship is given in the second semester of the freshman year.

The Maine Society of Professional Engineers- May 31, 2008

Awarding two scholarships for high school seniors:  The Robert E. Chute P.E. / Vernon T. Swain P.E. Scholarship –

You will need: application, scholarship recommendation of teacher (at least two), employer recommendation (optional), essay, transcript, attach SAT/ACT official score report.

Abbott & Fenner Scholarship, June 20, 2008

The A & F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution.  To apply for this scholarship you will need to write an essay on one of the two topics:* Discuss, in less than 1000 words, what you consider to be the single most important societal problem? Why?  * How has your education contributed to who you are today or how will it affect who you will become? Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association – July 15, 2008
Annual scholarship to deserving women who have participated in some aspect of the game of golf, and are planning to continue their education beyond high school.  Consideration will be given to the applicant’s involvement in golf as well her academic achievements and extra-curricular activities.  The applicant should live within the southern Maine area which includes all of York, Cumberland, Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties, a portion of Oxford County including Bethel and points south, a portion of Kennebec County including Litchfield and points south, and the towns of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor in Lincoln County.

Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce –
Graduating senior who plans to continue their studies in one of the following area: a four-year program at an accredited college or university, a two year or associated degree program at an accredited community business, vocational, technical or allied medical health training institution, a certificate program at an accredited post secondary school.  Criteria: good academic achievement, a record of reaching out for positive involvement with his/her local community, a good record of extracurricular involvement at his/her school and good time/task management skills.

Cavalier Bingo Sports Scholarship-
For a senior who is and has been participating in sports.  Based on need.  Need to write an essay and must have a “B” average.

Paul Stephen Friedler Scholarship-

In memory of Paul Friedler who was a member of the Class of 1995 and who lost his life while serving in Vietnam.  For a student with financial need, pursing studies in the fields of philosophy, music and/ or mathematics physics.
