Lewiston High School

Science Fair

On May 3, 2001, the Lewiston High School science fair took place. Projects were divided between the categories of Physical and Life Science, with first, second, and third place awards given in each, as well as a "Best of Fair" award of a $250 U.S. saving bond. All participants received a certificate of merit.

During the course of their work on the science fair, students (1) learned inquiry and problem solving approaches in science and technology, (2) developed skill in scientific reasoning in order to formulate and justify ideas and to make informed decisions, (3) communicated effectively in a variety of ways in order to present their findings.

Every ninth and tenth grader was required to prepare a project; for eleventh and twelfth graders, the fair was optional, yet many still participated. In all, over three hundred projects were displayed and judged by members of the community. These projects were the result of hard work over the course of the entire year 2000-2001 school year. Participating students were required to make a broad topic selection by October first, following with a research paper on their topic of choice and project hypothesis in November. Class presentations of the projects took place throughout April. Students were also required to keep a log book of their activities.

In addition, the science fair marked a successful collaboration between the high school and neighboring Bates College. Thirty-two Bates faculty, staff and students were recruited to act as judges, while fourteen Bates students participated as e-mail mentors during the course of the school year, aiding high school students in the design and construction of projects. The e-mail mentors offered advice and helped the LHS students narrow their topics, find resources, and manage their time effectively. This connection was coordinated through the Bates Center for Service Learning, which oversaw all interactions between the college and high school. Both schools hope to continue their collaboration for future science fairs and other projects.
