LRTC serves the vocational and technical training needs of Lewiston and the surrounding community. Its purpose is to prepare students for success in college, the world of work or an extended program of training.
The staff shares a common vision incorporating the following principles as its core, a belief that:
- students are the basic foundation of our Technical Center and their needs, interests and well-being are our priority.
- instruction and training which parallels the current demands of business, industry and continuing education is best for students.
- instruction is meaningful when it is relevant to the students and incorporates current issues. Therefore, skills, knowledge and behaviors should not be isolated from practical applications.
- students should be active participants in the educational process and make significant choices and decisions about their education and careers within a trusting, supportive environment.
- students must have opportunities to explore their own questions, ideas and interests in order to be effective lifelong learners. Genuine inquiry, problem finding, problem solving and critical thinking skills must be emphasized.
- all students should develop and demonstrate effective communication skills.
- students must be capable of compiling, processing and creating their own information.
- instruction which recognizes the individual learning styles and integrated thematic approaches to learning is best.
- parents and community members are important contributors to the educational process.
- instruction must represent current technology and practices.
- the curriculum will be outcome based and student learning will be measured and assessed in meaningful and authentic ways.
- change is an ongoing process, not an event, and that planned change is a fundamental tenet of successful businesses, industries, schools and public agencies.
The staff of LRTC commits to:
- developing instructional strategies, curriculum and programs which are reflective of the Core Beliefs and Principles.
- outlining an organizational structure that models those practices found in successful businesses, industries and schools.
- promoting the needs of the individuals in conjunction with the needs of the organization.
- creating mechanisms for assessing the degree to which its missions, beliefs and practices are being met.
- prioritizing the utilization of human and financial resources.
- continuing professional growth and quality staff development.
