Our school was dedicated in 1969. Our original name was North Temple Elementary School because it was located on North Temple Street in Lewiston, Maine. On March 16, 1971, the Lewiston City Council named the new North Temple Elementary School the Thomas J. McMahon Elementary School after a Lewiston, Maine soldier whose heroic self-sacrifice in the Vietnam War led President Richard M. Nixon to award him the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously. Today that medal and the other 13 medals he won including the Bronze Star and three Purple Heart medals are displayed in a glass case outside the school library.
