Lab Safety Rules (2007-2008)
J NO FOOD, DRINKS, GUM, AND CANDY ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM!
J Students are not allowed in the chemical storage area and back room.
J Always wear safety goggles, unless instructed not to. It is required under Maine law.
J Hair should be tied back, so as not to fall into flame or other hazardous chemicals.
Open toed shoes are NOT allowed on lab days. It is an OSHA violation.
J Make sure lab bench area is completely clean before leaving the class. I will double check. Somebody else has to sit there after you leave.
J Wash your hands before leaving the lab.
J Listen to instructions.
J Do not do something that you were not instructed to do. Harm could result!
J No horseplay.
J Keep walkways clear of backpacks and other items.
J Pay attention to equipment and chemicals around you at all times.
J Never put contents of a container back into the same container. Material will be contaminated.
J Follow instructions for disposing of chemicals. Do not throw anything down the sink, unless instructed to do so.
J Never sniff or taste chemicals.
J Never carry hot equipment near other people.
J Please ask questions when in doubt! No question is a dumb question! Chances are, someone else has the same question.
In Case of Accident:
J Report all accidents and spills immediately.
J Place broken glass in designated containers.
J For burns, immerse in cold water immediately.
J If you spill an acid or a base on your skin and/or clothes, flush with water and rub in baking soda to neutralize. Use the shower if the area is too large for the faucet. A box of baking soda will be left in the fume hood.
J If chemicals get in your eyes, wash them for at least 15 minutes at the eyewash station located in the room.
J Everyone in the lab is responsible for the safety of everyone else in the room!
J Be smart and think safety!! Labs are an excellent learning experience when proper safety is practiced!!
