Philosophy of Special Education
“The teacher must orient his work not on yesterday's development in the child but on tomorrow's” - Lev Vygotsky
I often asked myself what my purpose in life is.  Just recently a few years back, when I did mission trips to Russia and Ukraine working with mentally challenged orphans I found my purpose in life.  Those orphans sparked feelings inside me that I never felt before - they have touched my soul.  Every time I looked into their eyes I saw their ability to learn and be unique diamonds of society.  But no one wanted to take time to work with the rough stone to make the diamond.  I knew then that I want to be a special education teacher to make a difference in children’s lives: To make them sparkle in our society and show their unique beauty for people to admire.
Learning is more than the acquisition of the ability to think; it is the acquisition of many specialized abilities for thinking about a variety of things” - Lev Vygotsky
“The more children know that you value them, that you consider them extraordinary people, the more willing they will be to listen to you and afford you the same esteem. And the more appropriate your teaching, based on your knowledge of them, the more eager your children will be to learn from you. And the more they learn, the more extraordinary they will become”
- M. Scott Peck
My purpose is to teach my students everything I know.  I want to inspire them to reach higher goals and go far beyond their abilities.  I want my students to know that their disabilities are not a flaw but a unique trait that enhances their personality.  I want to be someone my students will depend on without fear.  I want to give back a piece of the light they give to the people around them.  I believe that they deserve an equal education and equal rights to life.  I believe that special children are important members of our society and can accomplish great things if given the chance.
