Credit: ½ elective FA (½ FA credit only; may not be taken twice for FA credit)
Pre-requisite: none

Description and Major Units of Study:
This course is designed for the beginning ceramics student who may not have prior art-making experience with clay as a medium. Students will gain experience in various hand- building techniques (including pinch, coil and slab construction, modeling and glazing) and produce several finished pieces to demonstrate understanding and appreciation of ceramics as an art form and means of expression. Students will gain knowledge about ceramic art and artists in the context of American history (from colonial times through today). Emphasis is placed on the development of skills, otherwise referred to as “craftsmanship”. In order to express ideas or feelings with some degree of sophistication, craftsmanship is required, much as vocabulary and grammar are to the writing process. Wheel-thrown pottery is not included in this course.

Text and Materials: Supplies are provided

Expectations:
Ceramics is a studio course; learning occurs through doing. Attendance is crucial to completing assignments. Supplies cannot be sent home for students to do their work outside of studio time. Assessment is based largely on studio performance, the quality of the various projects, and the insights and knowledge gained along the way. Students will create ceramic vessels and sculptures that show some degree of mastery of technique ultimately used as a vehicle for expressing ideas. Students must take notes from a five part video series about ceramic art in America. Students will increase their vocabulary regarding ceramic art and be able to express themselves intelligently to demonstrate knowledge. A final examination will take place on the last day of the semester. If students are absent, studio time must be made up either after school or during an available study hall. This can easily be arranged with the instructor.
