Instructor: Jody Dube
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Credit: ½ elective FA (½ FA credit only; may not be taken twice for FA credit)
Pre-requisite: Ceramics – (Student is personally invested in working in clay, having developed an interest and abilities)
Description and Major Units of Study:
This course is designed to provide interested students the opportunity to continue to work in clay beyond the introductory course. Beyond craftsmanship-building, this course goes a step further and places considerable responsibility on the student to use clay to express thoughts, ideas in a manner called “higher order thinking” (as per Bloom’s Taxonomy). Ambitious, thoughtful planning is required. Studio time remains important, but homework is also assigned and projects need to be researched and thought through before the student even arrives to work in the studio. As this course is very challenging, a serious commitment to excellence is required. A strong ability to self-direct is required to successfully complete this course. Experience gained from introductory level Ceramics should result in confident knowledge and
ability in various construction techniques which students bring to this course. Students will be assigned readings to broaden understanding and appreciation of ceramic art and artists. Students are expected to provide thoughtful feedback on the readings. Students will also be expected to thoughtfully and intelligently write about their own work and processes.
Texts and Materials: Supplies are provided.
Expectations:
As these students have already taken Ceramics, the expectation is that they will have demonstrated interest, a solid work ethic and function as self-directed learners. Students must take responsibility for their work. The instructor will be helpful, but the student sets his or her own agenda and generates project ideas. The expectation is that students take an ambitious; self disciplined approach to growth and self-expression. Attendance is important, as this is a studio course in which learning happens through doing.
