awards and recognition
We have been very fortunate at Lewiston High School to have several ambitious art students earn regional and national recognition for their excellent work*. Ceramics students in particular have garnered several awards (regional and national Gold and Silver Key and Merritt Awards) through Scholastic Art and Writing Awards each year. http://www.artandwriting.org/  We have also had students get their work into the national juried exhibit called Shaped Clay, at the Everson Museum at Syracuse University. In both Scholastic Art and Shaped Clay, students compete against thousands of gifted young artists from all over the United States. To earn this sort of recognition is indeed an accomplishment to be very proud of. We have also recently had one of our Ceramics students' work recognized in the Maine Congressional District Awards and she was honored at the Blaine House in Augusta by Governor Baldacci and Congressman Mike Michaud.

During the spring of 2008, an LHS senior had entered his work into a national juried cup exhibit at the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. His work was up against stiff competition in the form of much older, adult, established artists and though the jury did not accept his piece into the exhibit he was invited by the gallery director to take part in the Director's Choice Show that was held in conjunction with the cup show. The gallery director was obviously impressed with the quality of his work and considered it on a par with the professional work she deals with on a regular basis.
