All Maine resident babies born on or after January 1, 2009 will be eligible for a $500 grant, thanks to the Harold Alfond College Challenge. Lewiston Public Schools is seeking proposals for contracted services to evaluate the effectiveness of the Lewiston/Auburn Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) Initiative. LMS to Host Presentation on Social Networking

The Lewiston Middle School Parent Teacher Partnership Organization (PTPO) is sponsoring a presentation on social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. Proper management of Internet issues by our youth is very important, so all students and parents in the community are invited to attend. Detective Inez Dudley of the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit will be at the Lewiston Middle School auditorium on Wednesday, November 19 at 6:30pm to present on this topic. The new Geiger Elementary School district will include all of the current Pettingill district and some areas currently in the Montello district. Lewiston voters have approved $45.7 million in education spending following yesterday's 2008-09 budget validation referendum. Voters approved the budget by a 560-142 margin.

Effective with the 2008-09 school budget, public law now requires that Kindergarten through Grade 12 (K-12) school budget be approved by the School Committee, in specific warrant articles by the City Council (the school region's legislative body), and by a "yes" vote on the total budget by a budget validation referendum.

Lewiston's budget validation referendum will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center on Birch St from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

To All persons who received special education services in Lewiston Public Schools and who were born prior to June 30, 1982, or their parents:

Lewiston Public Schools may have special education records in its possession for those students and will destroy such records after August 1, 2008. If you would like to have these records rather than having them destroyed, please contact the Principal's Office at Lewiston High School, 156 East Avenue, Lewiston, Maine, 795-4190 prior to August 1, to make arrangements for obtaining the records.

School Committee Approves Calendar Change

Lewiston Public Schools has experienced an unusually high number of snow days this year (8), pushing the last day of school well into June. In an effort to move up the last day of school, the Lewiston School Committee voted to change the two workshop days of March 20 and 21 into regular student days. Providing no additional days are lost, the last day of school for students will now be Thursday, June 19.

United Way TOPS Summer Camp Fair

The United Way of Androscoggin County's annual TOPS Camp Fair will be held at the Multi-Purpose Center in Lewiston on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 from 5p.m-7p.m. For eight successful years, TOPS has been providing Lewiston Public School students with the opportunity to attend summer camps throughout the state of Maine. In 2007, over 1,000 Lewiston Public School students were awarded TOPS Scholarships.
