New LHS Traffic PatternDecember 31, 2009A new traffic pattern will go into effect at Lewiston High School starting Monday, January 4. H1N1 Booster Vaccine Clinics PostponedDecember 1, 2009The H1N1 booster shot clinics scheduled for next week have been postponed. Due to a shortage of the vaccine, a batch of booster shots will not be sent to us until all high risk individuals on waiting lists have been given the vaccine. The booster clinics will be formally rescheduled as soon as possible, most likely at the beginning of next year.

The clinics will be held between October 26 and November 4, 2009, during the normal school day. Eastern Equine Encephalitis AlertSeptember 23, 2009The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has requested schools share some important guidance regarding Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). EEE is a very serious viral infection transmitted to people from the bite of an infected mosquito. In recent weeks the virus has killed horses in several nearby counties. Voters Approve Budget AmendmentsSeptember 16, 2009Lewiston voters have approved amendments to the Lewiston School Department's budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year. The amendments fix a technical error that would have caused the city to lose approximately $3,000,000 in state subsidy.
Budget Amendment ReferendumSeptember 4, 2009A Budget Validation Referendum will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center on Birch St. Voters will be asked if they favor approving amendments to the Lewiston School Department's budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Due to a technical error, the city is in jeopardy of losing approximately $3,000,000 in state subsidy for 2009-10. Flu Vaccine Available for All StudentsSeptember 3, 2009The Federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is now recommending all children receive vaccination against seasonal influenza. In light of this new influenza recommendation the Maine Department of Education (DOE) and the Maine Immunization Program (MIP) are offering influenza immunization clinics in your child’s school for all school aged children who are students. Dates for these clinics are September 21-28, 2009, and they will be held during the normal school day. Pre-K Registration and LotteryMay 26, 2009Lewiston's Pre-K program has been expanded to include classrooms at Farwell, Geiger, Longley, and Montello elementary schools, each of which is split into two half-day sessions of 14 children. Due to the limited number of slots, Lewiston Public Schools is unable to accommodate all of the children whose parents have expressed interest in the program.In order to determine which students will be admitted to the program, a Pre-K lottery will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at the Dingley Building. Swine Flu UpdateMay 7, 2009The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has adjusted its recommended course of action for K-12 schools responding to an H1N1 virus infection. Voters Approve 2009-10 BudgetMay 6, 2009Lewiston voters have approved $49.6 million in education spending following yesterday's 2009-10 budget validation referendum. Voters approved the budget by a 351-73 margin.

2009-10 LPS Budget Validation ReferendumApril 29, 2009Public law requires that Kindergarten through Grade 12 (K-12) school budgets be approved by the School Committee, in specific warrant articles by the City Council (the school region's legislative body), and by a "yes" vote on the total budget by a budget validation referendum.Lewiston's budget validation referendum will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center at 145 Birch St from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. 2009-10 Kindergarten RegistrationMarch 30, 2009The Lewiston Public Schools Curriculum office has released the Kindergarten Registration and Screening schedule for the 2009-10 schoolyear. Registration will be held for one day at each elementary school during the first week of May. Lewiston Public Schools Releases 2009-10 CalendarMarch 25, 2009Lewiston Public Schools has released its calendar for the 2009-10 schoolyear, approved by the School Committee at their meeting on March 23. Training Series for Parents of Children with AutismMarch 24, 2009The Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center is pleased to announce a six session training series for parents of children (approximate ages 8 to 11) with autism spectrum behaviors. Parents will be provided with tools to define behaviors, target the most important behaviors and then practice the interventions between sessions, with the goal of reducing stress and gaining a sense of empowerment. The training series is free and will be held from 5 to 7 PM at the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council in Augusta. Click here for more information.
Scam AlertMarch 12, 2009The Finance Authority of Maine has alerted high school guidance counselors of a potential scam targeting students and their families. Parents in the area have received suspicious phone calls from a company offering SAT and ACT test preparation materials. Parents say the callers have referenced their student's name and school, and have been told that their student either signed up for the program or have been enrolled in the program by the school. Please be aware that Lewiston High School's guidance office does not enroll students in an any paid test preparation program. If you receive a similar phone call, please be cautious about sharing your personal and financial information.
Lewiston 21st Century Grant SurveyMarch 11, 2009Lewiston Public Schools is partnering with LA Arts to apply for a grant to support an after school program. The activities would be aimed at students at the middle and high schools. This program would include time to complete homework, tutoring, and a variety of fun activities, including visual and performing arts enrichment programs. We hope to offer programs year round. This is still in the early stages, but your ideas are important to us as we design the program.
