Superintendent Search
The Lewiston School Committee has started the process of searching for a new superintendent of schools. This web page has been set up to both provide and gather information about the search to applicants, staff, and the public.
An Invitation to Apply for Superintendent of Schools
The Lewiston School Committee is inviting highly successful educational leaders with the personal drive and passion to meet the challenge of an urban, multi-cultural community and lead its schools into the future.
The system employs a professional staff of 452 and a support staff of 343. FY10 budget is $51,688,000. Lewiston has a projected enrollment of 5,063 students, and is comprised of 6 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 high school, and 1 regional technical center. Lewiston also provides an extensive adult education program.
Selection Criteria
The ideal candidate...
- Has strong fiscal management skills with strong experience in budget development and management.
- Is committed to increasing student achievement.
- Will continue to foster student growth within the English language learner population.
- Will implement the local strategic plan.
- Has effective communication skills.
- Will address the high school drop-out rate.
- Maintains relations with local, state, and federal government.
- Promotes community involvement.
Qualifications
- Certified or eligible for certification as a superintendent of schools in Maine.
- Masters degree required, doctorate encouraged.
- Ten years experience in education.
Application Process & Timeline
Complete application and information must be received by the deadline. Interviews will be conducted in June and July with a second round of interviews in August. The appointment will be made in September, 2010 with an anticipated starting date of January 2, 2011.

Thomas Shannon, Co-Chair
Lewiston School Committee
Tom Shannon is a former chair of the Lewiston School Committee. He served in the Maine House of Representatives. He has lived in Lewiston all of his life and is the father of 4, grandfather of 3.
Joyce Gibson, Co-Chair
Dean of University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College
Joyce Gibson serves as Dean of USM's Lewiston-Auburn College. Previously she served as Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Services at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and was responsible for service development for students, staff and faculty, as well as developing strategic plans for improved efficiency and effectiveness. She has extensive experience in retention programs and conflict management, and has taught courses in leadership, organizational change, and managing diversity.
Hanan Ahmed
Student
Hanan Ahmed is a senior at Lewiston High School and is one of two student representatives on the Lewiston School Committee. She was born in Nairobi, Kenya and moved to the United States at age eight. She lives with her mom and younger brother. She also serves on the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council.
Richard Albert
Business-person
Richard Albert served on the Lewiston School Committee, 1994-95; He was elected to the Lewiston City Council from 1996-2000- He has been the Chair of the Board of the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce, President of the Maine Insurance Agents. He served as United Way Campaign Chair in 2007 and Co-Chair in 2009 and 2010.
Michael Bussiere
Chief of Police, Parent
Michael Bussiere has been with the Lewiston Police Department since 1990. Mike served previously as a Patrol Officer, Violent Crimes Detective, Patrol Sergeant and Deputy Chief before being named Chief in 2009. He serves on the board of the U.S. Attorney's Office's Project Safe Neighborhoods Committee, Healthy Androscoggin, the Core Management Team of Safe Schools/Healthy Students and several other boards and committees. Mike has a BA in Criminology from the University of Southern Maine and completed the Command Training Program at Babson College. He is a graduate of the 222nd session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
John Butler
Lewiston City Council
John Butler is the City Councilor representing ward one. A graduate of Lewiston High School, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from St. Michael's College in Vermont. He is a lifelong Lewiston resident and parent of 3 children educated in Lewiston Public Schools. He served 16 years on Lewiston School Committee.
Paul Dumont
Lewiston School Committee
Paul Dumont has lived in Lewiston-Auburn all of his life. He recently retired from Hudson Bus Lines where he was a supervisor and special education transportation coordinator. He served 3 years in the US Army. For seven years he has been an umpire in softball and little league and volunteered for Lewiston youth hockey programs. He has two grown children and three grandchildren.
Steve Gagne
Classroom Teacher
Steve R. Gagne is a grades 4-6 classroom teacher and is Vice President of the Lewiston Education Association. A 1986 graduate of Lewiston High School, he graduated from Saint Joseph's College of Maine with a BA in Sociology/Psychology in 1990; USM MSED Literacy Education (1997); Saint Joseph's College MSED Teaching and Learning (2005); He holds Maine Teacher Certification K-8 and Maine Literacy Specialist Certification K-12.
Paul Gauvreau
Attorney with the Maine AG's Office
Paul Gauvreau is an Assistant Attorney General who advises state agencies regarding public health, medical privacy and substance abuse issues. Prior to joining the Attorney General's Office in 1997, he practiced law in Lewiston for 22 years and represented the City of Lewiston in both the Maine House of Representatives and Maine Senate. He is a former Senate chairman of the Joint Standing Committee on Education. Paul is married to Evelyn Greenlaw, Library Services Director at Lewiston-Auburn College. He and Evelyn have two daughters, Jessica Gauvreau and Johanna Gauvreau.
Peter Geiger
Former member State Board of Education
Peter Geiger is a '69 LHS graduate and earned a BS Degree in Business Administration at Villanova University. He is Executive Vice President at Geiger and editor of the much beloved Farmers' Almanac. He has served on the Maine State Board of Education, is a six year Chair of the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education, and recent President of the Lewiston Education Fund. He established the Geiger/Montello Adopt-A-School partnership currently in its 22nd year.
Jim Handy
Chair of the Lewiston School Committee
Jim Handy is currently Chair of the Lewiston School Committee. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Southern Maine where he graduated with honors. He served in the Maine House of Representatives for 10 years and in the Maine Senate for two years. He is on the Board of Directors of L/A Arts. He is the parent of 3 children, all of whom attended Lewiston Public Schools.
Mark Jumper
Parent
Mark Jumper is a lifelong resident of the city of Lewiston and was educated in Lewiston Public Schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1983. He and wife, Anne Marie, we six children: Ashia, Benjamin, Gabrielle, Audrey, Bailey and Thomas. Ashia, Ben and Gabby were all educated in the Lewiston Schools. Throughout the years he has been an active member of the parent groups at his children's schools and currently serves as President of the Montello PTFC. He is the manager of The VacShak in Lewiston.
Gus LeBlanc
Principal, Lewiston High School
Gus LeBlanc is the Principal of Lewiston High School. He has 27 years in various positions as a school administrator in elementary, secondary and higher education. He is currently an adjunct instructor for New England College and has been previously employed as a teacher at the high school and technical college levels. He received bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Maine. He is the president-elect of the Maine Principals' Association and is an Admissions Partner for the United States Coast Guard Academy. He resides in Auburn, Maine with his wife Patti.
Joan Macri
College for ME
Joan Macri works for College for ME-Androscoggin and is Associate Director of LearningWorks at the University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn College. After a long career of teaching and coaching at Lewiston High School and creating the Aspirations Lab and other college-related programming at the high school, she is now working to increase college enrollment and completion county-wide. She works with all Androscoggin County school districts and colleges delivering services such as early college class coordination, career and college planning support, and professional development.
Dick Metivier
Former Lewiston Finance Dept. Director
Dick Metivier, after 41 years of service to the city of Lewiston recently retired as the Director of Finance. He is a consultant with Eaton-Peabody on municipal finance matters. He attended Husson College in Bangor and is a father and grandfather.
ZamZam Mohamud
Parent
ZamZam Mohamud is a resident of Lewiston, ME since 2001. She has served on the Mayor's Downtown Neighborhood Task Force and the Lewiston Police Department's Civil Rights Team. Recently, she was appointed to the City of Lewiston Administrators search committee. She has been very active within the Lewiston School District and served in the Lewiston Middle and High Schools' Community Advisory Board. For the past 8 years, ZamZam has volunteered and worked at Central Maine Medical Center. She lives with her 2 teenage children.
Leah Poulin
Lewiston School Committee
Leah Poulin is the at large representative on the Lewiston School Committee. She is a full-time student and a stay-at-home mom of a teenage daughter and eight year old son.
Sonia Taylor
Lewiston School Committee
Sonia Taylor is the Ward 5 representative on the Lewiston School Committee. She is a life-long resident of the city of Lewiston. Her four children have been educated in Lewiston Public Schools. She and her husband are directors of an urban youth outreach called The Jesus Party.
Richard Wagner
State Representative
Richard Wagner is a retired Bates College educator. He and his wife, Lois, have been residents of Lewiston for 40 years; their four children all attended Lewiston public schools. Dick is currently a State Representative for Lewiston's House District #73 and serves on the Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee.
Crystal Ward
Former High School Teacher
Crystal Ward recently retired as a government teacher at Lewiston High School. She is a former President of the Lewiston Education Association.

Staff input regarding the search for a new Superintendent of Schools is welcomed.
