Education/Development of Children Program and Teaching Children Practicum

The Education/Development of Children Program is designed to provide students with knowledge and job skills for employment or further education in the field of early childhood and elementary education.

Provides students the opportunity to . . .

• learn about child development, health and safety issues, positive guidance techniques, the value of play, and age appropriate activities to do with young children during the first semester in the classroom, through use of media, performance tasks, textbook, assignments, and activities.

• obtain training in AHA Family & Friend and CPR.

• visit some local Early Care and Education Facilities and then to work for several weeks at a local facility or in an elementary school classroom through a job practicum.

• plan the preschool curriculum of weekly themes implement the preschoolers' learning activities in a variety of areas.

Career Opportunities . . .

Students considering a career as an elementary teacher will also find the Teaching Children Practicum Program a valuable experience working with a mentor teacher in an elementary classroom for a semester or year.

Opportunities After Completion of Course

After completion of the EDC program, you can find employment in a variety of education related fields as an assistant teacher in an early care and education facility, teacher's aide, nanny, or family child care provider.

Or, you can continue your education in the field in a two to four year college.

Students enrolling in Early Childhood Occupations Program should . . .

• have a love of children.

• be dependable and reliable.

• be aware that reading lexiles for entry level occupational reading materials in the Education and Training field are 1320-1370.

• have good communication skills and reading skills for the 1010 lexiled textbook.

 

Partnership programs

With local early care and education facilities and elementary schools for students’ placement in job practicum sites.

CMCC credit for course ECE 113 Curriculum and Environment for Young Children may be earned in meeting required criteria.

Students are required to . . .

Provide transportation to and from their job site placement.

Graduation Credits . . .

Upon successful completion, a certificate will be given.

Junior or Senior Year (senior year students have first choice)- 2 blocks / alternating days
- 36 weeks - 2 credits

Teaching Children Practicum

This course is designed for the senior student who wants experience working with younger students in various settings.

Students exploring opportunities to . . .

• Volunteer with a mentor teacher in a classroom.

• Experience some class instruction in work related ethics, child development, safety, positive guidance techniques, child observations and portfolio development.

• Develop and maintain a professional portfolio to document practicum competencies.

• And must be able to work independently, have excellent attendance, and provide their own transportation to and from the job practicum site.

Prerequisites: Application and recommendation.

Graduation Credits . . .

High school credits awarded for successful completion of program.

Senior year – 1 or 2 blocks / alternating days

- 18 or 36 weeks – ½ or 1 credit
