Course Description
This course is an introduction to the basic materials and methods of printmaking techniques which will include linoleum, woodcut, monotype, dry point, as well as other types of print processes. These processes will be discussed, analyzed, and investigated through studio experiences. This course is designed for students who have taken Drawing and Painting and have displayed a high level of skill and an interest in expanding upon the skills gained in Drawing and Painting I. Creative expression will be explored through the use of new and varied subject matter and techniques. This course will broaden students’ understanding of Art History (specifically in the medium of Printmaking), criticism, and aesthetics. This is an advanced course in which an ambitious and dedicated approach is expected.
Attendance is important, as what is accomplished in this course will happen in the studio. Advanced students are absolutely expected to be motivated, self-disciplined workers. Although extra studio time is not absolutely required outside of class, advanced students often discover the value in investing more time as their projects become greater, more ambitious endeavors. Serious commitment is expected from advanced students. Students are strongly encouraged to produce works of the highest quality and personal integrity possible. Use of a sketchbook or idea journal is strongly encouraged. Students are to discuss and explore meaning and/or intent. Advanced students are expected to encourage one another’s creative process and participate in a supportive studio environment where excellence can occur.
Texts and Materials: Supplies are provided.
Expectations: The expectation is that students take an ambitious; self disciplined approach to growth and self-expression. Attendance is important, as this is a studio course in which learning happens through doing. Assessment is based largely on studio performance, the effort put forth and the quality of resulting projects. Students will create prints that show understanding of technique as a vehicle for expressing ideas. Students will increase their vocabulary regarding fine art and be able to express themselves intelligently to demonstrate knowledge. Students will be expected to keep a portfolio of finished prints. If students are absent, studio time must be
made up either after school or during an available study hall. This can easily be arranged with the instructor.

Each student leaving Printmaking will:
1. Have a thorough knowledge of the techniques and processes of Printmaking.
2. Use arts knowledge and vocabulary to critique their work. ~
3. Produce quality work which demonstrates awareness of artmaking concepts and
techniques, and show improvement in the use of these tools over the course of the term. ~
4. Gain insight into the spiritual and practical sides of art. ~
5. Begin to view art as a context within which they can study relationships between the
past, themselves, and the universe.
6.Leave this course with a portfolio of finished editions.

The first section of Printmaking will involve the rendering of simple, 3-dimensional solids. In carving these forms, students will continue to develop their hand-eye coordination, observational skill, and regain confidence in their ability to reproduce the world around them in a mannered style.. Composition will be explored at a much greater depth as students execute their own works. This work will set the stage for the more complicated subject matter and advanced concepts which are to follow. As always, emphasis will be placed on improvement and a personal commitment to excellence. |

Week 1-3 |
Students will work on a block print of a still life. Methods of measuring will be discussed/reinforced as students delve into the realm of carving from observation. Basic block carving tools and techniques will be introduced (see Lessons & Methods). Negative space, proportion, and the use of lights and darks to model form will be investigated and utilized in rendering these forms. |

Week 4 |
Basic printing technique will be introduced. Students will print their finished blocks. Each student will turn in an edition of at least five (5) prints, signed and numbered. Printing on a colored ground/ register will be introduced |

Week 5-8 |
. Students will work on a block print of their own design using multiple source materials. Proper composition and color will be paramount. Concepts and techniques from the previous print will, of course, be incorporated into this work as well. |

Week 9-14 |
Students will produce a one class monotype of a still life of simple forms. Subtractive print method will be introduced. Use of the printing press will be introduced/ demonstrated. Subsequent one class monotypes of their own design, both observational and taken from source references will be completed. Multicolor monotypes will also be an option. |

Weeks 15-18 |
Students will work on a long-term, larger scale, fully rendered, ambitious full color block print. Multiple source materials will be utilized with an emphasis on observational work. Composition will surely be a factor in fashioning an illusionistic and powerful work of aesthetic significance. This really is the culmination of all the thinking and hard work that's been done over the course of the semester. ~ |
