What is the Nutrition Center of Maine?

As one of the newest health services offered by St. Mary's Health System, the Nutrition Center works to improve the nutritional status of all Maine residents.  The Center strives to be a community resource and works towards promoting overall community wellness and providing all people with access to nutritious food, the opportunity to learn and implement healthy and safe eating practices, the support to make lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of nutrition related diseases and the ability to promote personal food security through growing one’s own food. Additional goals include providing the opportunity for those involved in nutrition related fields to meet on a professional basis to collaborate and share information around local, state, and federal nutrition initiatives.

What is the Nutrition Center Home To?

The Nutrition Center of Maine is home to the St. Mary's Food Pantry, Lots to Gardens and the Nutrition Center Kitchen.  In conjunction with local and state agencies, these programs provide an array of nutrition services for low to moderate-income people. These services include emergency food distribution, community gardening outreach and education, cooking and nutrition classes, clinical nutrition workshops and fitness and exercise classes.  The Center also serves as a site for community and nutrition-related events.

The building is a melting pot of cultures, services and individuals, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds with an interest in addressing hunger, nutrition and social justice issues.

Food Pantry

St. Mary's Food Pantry gives food to those who would otherwise go without. The Food Pantry provides food to 200 families per week.

Lots to Gardens

Lots to Gardens is a youth and community driven organization that uses sustainable urban agriculture to create access to fresh food, and to nurture healthy youth and a healthy community. Since 1999, Lots to Gardens has built fifteen gardens and green-spaces in four diverse neighborhoods in Lewiston.

 Nutrition Center Kitchen and Classroom

The Nurition Center Kitchen and Classroom serve as sites for wellness education in nutrition and fitness.  The spaces also serve as meeting sites for local, state and federal agencies working in the nutrition related fields.
